Trúc Bạch Lake is one of the many natural lakes in the city of Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. The lake is known as the place where United States Senator (Arizona) and former Republican presidential nominee in the 2008 US presidential election was shot down by an anti aircraft missile on October 26, 1967 during Vietnam War. McCain landed with his parachute in the lake and almost drowned. He was afterwards beaten by city residents, angry of the previous US attacks, and later put into jail as a prisoner of war. Due to Hanoi’s fast and unsustainable development Trúc Bạch Lake is also one of the most seriously polluted lakes in Hanoi. The water is black and foul smelling. Rubbish and dead fish float on the surface. A wide range of human activities such as wastewater discharge has been contributing to worsening the water quality.

Ho Chi Minh City`s District 5, also known as Cho Lon, is Vietnam's largest Chinatown. It is a historical place of big importance for Chinese minorities. Chinese refugees settled here and began to sell a variety of Chinese products. During the Vietnam War Cho Lon was a booming black market for US soldiers trading in American Army issue supplies. Cho Lon means "big market" and that's what it literally is: A huge market, crowded and messy.
